"The Real Thing" is a memoir of a post-student adventure in the 1980s. After attending a music conservatory, and realizing the glamour life of a concert pianist probably wasn't in the cards, I got hooked on Bulgarian folk music. In a quest for the pure musical traditions, and likewise searching for authenticity in my life, I learned a bit of the language and traveled around Bulgaria for several months. I didn't expect purity and authenticity to include being removed from a bus at gunpoint, being prevented from leaving the country when I wanted to, or experiencing unique moments of friendship and sharing across a daunting cultural divide.

Brad's a master at making the complex simple. You don't need to know anything about Bulgarian folk music (or even Bulgaria, for that matter), before reading this excellent memoir. Brad has taken the time to unravel the complex parts of folk music for you without seeming pedantic.
But don't get overly caught up in the "folk music" bit ... "The Real Thing" is really a jaunty little travel story as told by a narrator on a quest to find 'authentic-sounding' music in an unfamiliar place. It's equal parts travel narrative, fish-out-of-water story, history teaching, and music lesson. Oh both beer and guns make an appearance, as well, to liven up the final act.
Anyone who has ever done any traveling in a developing country will quickly relate to the challenges Brad encountered. Similarly, anyone who has ever found himself realizing a change in himself will likewise relate. It's a fun, quick read -- especially for anyone longing for adventure in a distant land.
