Sarah Blaine's mother was physically and emotionally abusive and was also a narcissist. Sarah takes you through her memoir and journey of what it's like to grow up in a dysfunctional household. She does such a good job of describing her story that you will feel as though you are right there with her, feeling every fearful feeling she did.As raised from a narcissistic mother myself, I could relate to so many feelings that the Author described. Such as always wishing and hoping that if I did just one more thing right, I could make her love me. Sarah also does a great job at explaining how narcissism works to destroy our very souls. All throughout the book, her mother does not respect her and continues to abuse her well into her adulthood. I was very happy to read how Sarah took back her life by setting healthy boundaries for herself and new life. It was a story that kept me reading from start to finish in less than 24 hours.

I was glued to this book. It is emotionally riveting! I could not stop wondering what happened next. Page after page was like a flashback for me filled with hints of insight and revelation into my own story of abuse, I kept wondering how she would get out of this a whole person. I felt like I was there with her the whole time. I remembered myself as a little girl tiptoeing through the house terrified about when the next explosion would rock my world! I wanted to shout for her! I wanted to fight for her against those who controlled her ! Each chapter pulled me deeper into the pages of the book and into the life of young Sarah. At times, I had to put the book down because it became so real to me. But, the insight she gives throughout the book brought healing to me. I can not describe in words how this book has helped me realize that it was not my fault. It has helped me set boundaries. It has helped me become free. I would recommend this book to anyone who has survived the terroristic rule of a Narcissistic parent.
Once I started reading her book, I couldn't put it down. Never a lull and poignant. A very well written autobiography about what it is really like growing up under the tyranny of a NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder) parent - in this case, her mother. I was taken by how well written it was and how it so well communicated just how awful it is to be raised in a 'narcissistic family.' I too also grew up with such a mother and could relate to so much of it. The depiction is so accurate and really that painful. As I could relate so much to her story, parts of it triggered memories I thought I forgot, left me bawling and feeling that pain all over again - that once again validated that what I suffered was very real. Then there were parts where I completely rejoiced with her as she found her strength and power to overcome the abuse - going from victim to victor. For anyone who has ever been raised by such a parent exhibiting NPD, this is a story that is living proof that you can break free and you can find healing and wholeness for your soul. I very much recommend this read not only for others who lived with someone with NPD, but also for anyone struggling to understand someone else who is living in it. As I have shared with other people in my life, anyone who has never experienced this kind of abuse will never be able to wrap their heads around it - it is so unreal, even surreal, that it 'feels' hard to believe - but this book just might help someone who doesn't 'get it' to at least get a peek into the chaos and suffering of a child, and even an adult child, of such an abuser.
Many children with such parents are so brainwashed and or conditioned by their toxic family that many of us don't realize that this abuse isn't normal - its our normal until we are much older after seeing how other healthy families operate - and when life experience teaches us that something is terribly wrong. Adult victims have a terrible time finding healing - it is a long and arduous journey of being mentally deliberate in facing the truth and tearing down the lies that hold our minds captive.
I give it a 5-star rating for writing, content, and her willingness to share her very soul, being transparent to the point that nothing is hidden anymore. It is a must read for anyone in such a family or is trying to break free from such a family. And for those who don't get it, this just might help you to 'see.' It's a very real abuse with devastating consequences.
Awesome!!
Beautiful, potent writing for a potent message. This should be required reading for everyone.
Great book, very identifiable
It is inspiring to see a survivor like Sarah unafraid to speak the truth about what so many have kept quiet. It takes real courage and guts to be the voice of a dysfunctional family unit, to be the truth-teller. For this I commend her. For too long, it has always been 'hear no evil, see no evil.' and 'not my problem.' What kind of society are we if we don't protect our most valuable and cherished resource? Our children. Too many kids grow up in a silent hell that only they know and understand.
Wonderfully written. A gripping true life story of the strength of the human spirit to overcome and evolve.
A narcissistic parent is the scourge that steals away the child's spirit and soul.
No child should ever walk that path alone. Ever.
This is much in this book that anyone can learn from.
Sarah not only gives you a picture of the nightmare that children of narcissistic parents live in secret, but the dynamics of how the child is brainwashed and manipulated to conform. Sadly nothing the child does is ever satisfactory because another nightmare of a raging parent is like trying to maneuver a mine field so dense it is impossible to step without detonation. The background information about the traits and behaviors of narcissistic parents and other family members is very valuable to the reader. They may know people like this in their own family or in their community. Or realize with shock just like Sarah, that you have lived it yourself The long road to recovery from the damage caused by these evil people is a testament to the person who makes it out without becoming narcissistic themselves. Worth reading especially if you suffered also, to help you know you are not alone.
